THE GREAT STATE OF
FLORIDA
Tommy Mulligan RN, BSN, LMT
It was harder to sit down and write a bio than I thought, being one of a number of nurses who performed a complete career shift a little later in life. My original degree back in 1990 was a bachelor’s in Marketing. I did the whole Manhattan thing for awhile and then moved to Florida in 1991 for fun in the sun at 22 years old. I worked in a restaurant while looking for that “real” job during the day. I ended up staying in the restaurant biz for 10 years. Both loved and hated it.
My wife Theresa was in nursing school from 2001-2003. While helping her study I found an extreme interest in what she was learning. She was the one who suggested I go back to school. I was fortunate to find an accelerated BSN program at the University of Central Florida that was just starting and was in the first graduating class in August 2004. There were 5 men out of about 40 students averaging 35 years of age.
I have worked on a Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit (CVPCU) now since December 03, first as a tech and then an RN. I am fortunate to be surrounded by some incredible nurses with years of knowledge and a very proactive management team. I served as the chair of our nurse practice council from 2004-2005 in an attempt to give more power to the floor’s RN’s in their role as caregivers. Many challenges and a few successes while in that role.
I am getting ready for a new direction in nursing currently leaning toward Organ Procurement. I am currently waiting to see if I have been selected for this new position. If not I then I just might go to the E.R. for some more action and a faster pace. I do like floor nursing but do not see myself doing it much longer, being a little routine for my taste.
I am also the marketing director of a new CPR video aimed at parents, grandparents and babysitters that will be complete and ready for market by the end of this year. I get to play the distressed dad who calls 911. What a lot of fun that was. The video was completely done by nurses, two who have their own company teaching BLS and ACLS and another male RN whose first degree was in video production. I will let you all know when it’s ready.
Soon I will be in a UCF channel television program named “For Your Health” airing on bright house channel 19 in Orlando. It is tailored towards careers in nursing and will on in January. I will try to not let anyone down and will plug the magazine.
I am looking forward to writing for a magazine that tailors toward males in this great profession. I will try my best to bring you pertinent and interesting material that will keep you both informed and entertained. Please contact me at with comments or suggestions anytime.
