Timothy said “I do a lot of self-learning reading management and leadership books and articles. In my current role as Director of Nursing I have the opportunity to provide in-services to the nursing staff. Though I have an in-service coordinator I like to present materials that they would not otherwise see. I am big on continuing education, and feel that we never should stop, especially nurses”. Now you can see why I feel very luck to have Timothy reporting for us, just his years and his expertise and education can only help us.

November Report

State Panel Set to Announce List of Hospitals for Possible Closure

In New York State there is a state panel, The Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century headed by Commissioner Steven Berger responsible for creating a list of hospitals for closing. The Commission is operating on the premise that hospital capacity is too large. The recommendations are supposed to be sent to Albany by December 1st for Governor George Pataki to review.

The commission may suggest shifting our region’s trauma center and heart surgery to Kaleida’s Buffalo General Hospital. This move would greatly impact on the Erie County Medical Center. There is also discussion of developing a major University of Buffalo teaching center near Buffalo General Hospital on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Camps where UB already had other facilities. The move would eliminate duplicate programs and unneeded hospital beds, as well as satisfy the University at Buffalo's desire to centralize most of its doctor training in one location.

Area hospital leaders agree that there is a need to reduce the number of hospital beds to control cost and improve quality, but there is disagreement on what to do about it. Nearly half of the local hospital beds sit empty from the decline in population and shorter hospital stays. Facilities, many aging and deep in debt, have spread rising fixed costs over fewer patients, making it difficult to maintain adequate staffing levels and high quality.

There is no doubt that whatever decision is made by the commission will result in fewer hospitals that will be more specialized with higher quality and excellence.
